Other Civil War Books
A smattering of titles, some relating to the West, some of general Civil War interest.

An Uncommon SoldierAn Uncommon Soldier: The Civil War Letters of Sarah Rosetta Wakeman, Alias Private Lyons Wakeman, 153rd Regiment, New York State Volunteers, Lauren Cook Burgess (Editor). Paperback (March 1996). Of the hundreds of women who served as soldiers in Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War, none except for Sarah Rosetta Wakeman, wrote wartime letters that survived. Wakeman's letters are remarkable in their similarity to those of her fellow-soldiers. Her story is a familiar one--concern about the family farm, money issues, descriptions of fighting, and inevitable disease. Skillfully edited, this collection of correspondence is a fascinating portrait of a woman who took her service incognito very much for granted.

Army WivesArmy Wives on the American Frontier by Anne Bruner Eales. Paperback (September 1996). A delightful look at the tribulations of several brave women who married into the military and took their families to the western frontier. Drawn heavily from primary sources, this book shows the difficulty of trying to create a "normal" family life on the frontier. Excellent photo section.
